Description

English 10A introduces students to the Anglophone literatures of Medieval and Early Modern England and Colonial America, with the goal of preparing students for advanced literary study in upper-division courses. The class will focus on the emergence and development of literary traditions across a period of tremendous linguistic, cultural, and political change, considering texts from English and North American authors in service of this goal. Students will acquire an understanding of how Anglophone literature and language developed over time; improve their close-reading and analytical writing skills through focused attention to the content and form of poetry, prose, and drama; and practice interpretive response to a literary text. Primary assignments include short close reading and critical response papers, a midterm, and a final exam.
