Description

English 10B examines literatures written in English between 1700 and
1900. The second in a three-part series required for majors, this
course prepares students for upper-division work through developing
close reading skills while learning how to write about literature
situated in historical and interpretive contexts. Students will gain
an understanding of the historical emergence, development, and
singularity of major literary forms and movements while learning
strategies on how to interpret key texts with a focus on form and
language. Specifically, we will look at how major transitions in
English literary history from 1700 to 1900 reflect major transitions
in British and American society, culture, and politics, paying
particular attention to identity and nation formation in the UK and
the Americas.
