Description

English 10B examines literatures in English from 1700 to 1900. The second course in the three-part Literatures in English series, 10B is a reading- and writing-intensive course designed to prepare you for upper-division English classes. It aims to improve your critical reading, writing, and research skills and to introduce some key themes emerging in literatures in English in the time period. We will investigate the ways in which literature shapes and is shaped by the shifting social, cultural, and economic contexts of these turbulent centuries. Some issues we will cover include the expansion of print culture, revolution and nationalism, colonialism and slavery, anti-colonial resistance, and literary constructions of the natural world.

In addition to the texts listed below, we will also use a course reader including selected poems, essays, and short fiction.
