The Bible as Literature: The Old Testament

Description
This course introduces students to the literature of the Bible through exploring and analyzing the narratives, poetry, and writings that make up the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament). Special attention will be given to questions of genre, methods of interpretation, translation and canonicity, as well as the significance of the Bible to Western literature, thought, and culture. Students will read substantial portions of the Old Testament, as well as secondary materials showing a variety of critical approaches to the material (sociological, literary and socio-historical).
Grading
long paper (10 pages) (35%), midterm exam (20%), final exam (30%), class participation (15%)
