English 110A - Spring, 2016
Introduction to Literary Theory
Class Information
Instructor:
Watkins, Evan
Time:
MWF 9:00-9:50
Location:
158 Olson
Description
In this course we will work with some central concepts and influential texts in the history of literary criticism from Plato and Aristotle up through the 19th century. I can't promise you easy reading, but I think you'll end up liking the course and the readings more than what your likely dread of the Theory Requirement tells you. It is an especially good course to take for students planning to pursue graduate study in language and literature.
Grading
Evaluation will be based on two short (3-5) pg papers that will include rough drafts, peer reviews and a final version. (25% each); an essay take-home final (20%); section participation and grade (20%); lecture section in-class exercises (10%).
Texts
Norton Anthology of Theory and Criticism, 2nd edition, ISBN 9780393932928
, Leitch, et.al.
