Description
We will attempt to learn about some American Literature from the period 1900-1945. Rather than reading widely and without much depth, we will read only four books from the period, but we will read those books as closely as 10 weeks allows. The 4 books are: Winesburg, Ohio, by Sherwood Anderson; Their Eyes Were Watching God, by Zora Neale Hurston; Harmonium by Wallace Stevens; Light In August by William Faulkner.
Grading
• 6 small writing assignments (400 word minimum) make up 36% of your grade. These are responses to assigned readings, and they may be questions and exploratory thoughts—they are not essays in the conventional sense;
• a mid-term Exam makes up 14% of your grade;
• one larger essay makes up 30% of your grade (at least 6 pages, double-spaced, one-inch margins);
• the Final Exam makes up 20% of your grade.
