Shershow Bakes "Bread" With Former Student

Professor Scott Shershow’s new book "Bread" is available from Bloomsbury Press in a series edited by UC Davis English PhD program graduate Christopher Schaberg (now a professor at Loyola University New Orleans). “What a thrill it was to work with my former mentor,” Schaberg says, a sentiment echoed by Shershow, who comments, “There was a pleasing symmetry in receiving comments and suggestions from him about my writing as he had once received from me when he was writing his dissertation.”

"Bread" is part memoir, part history, part philosophy, all geared to a general audience. “I’ve been a lifelong amateur cook and baker,” Shershow reports, “so ‘bread’ seemed irresistible as an idea, given how many cultural and even political associations this object has.” Wide in its appeal, this is nonetheless very much a book by a serious scholar, Schaberg notes. “The challenge and reward of Bread is that it is a book about deconstruction, served in a wonderfully palatable medium.”
