English 210 - Fall, 2012
Readings in English & American Literature
Topic: The Literature of Terror
Class Information
Instructor:
Simpson, David
Time:
CANCELLED
Location:
120 Voorhies
Description
The course will examine selected theories and literary expressions of terror (and the sublime) from the period of the French Revolution to the present, to establish critical continuities and differences between, for example, the Gothic novel in the 18th and early 19th centuries, the 'fear of the other' in late 19th century fiction, and the literature of 9/11.
Tentative reading list would include (from among) Kant and Burke on the sublime; Robespierre on terror; the Bush White House on terror; Arnold, Mackey etc. on fear of the mob; novels by Radcliffe, 'Monk' Lewis, Walpole, Maturin, Mary Shelley, Dickens, Conrad, Richard Marsh, Conan Doyle, DeLillo, Beigbeder, Safran Foer, and others.
