Description
We will study the phenomenon known as the Gothic, mostly reading novels of the Romantic period but paying attention also to poetry (and perhaps drama), to critics and theorists of the time, and to modern critical accounts. Poe, Hawthorne and Brockden Brown will be our examples of American Gothic; otherwise most of our authors will be British: Austen, Godwin, Radcliffe, Mary Shelley, Walpole and (perhaps) Beckford, among others. Some of the materials will be available in a course reader; others can be purchased at the bookstore. Please provide yourself with a copy of 'Northanger Abbey' (widely available; any edition is acceptable).
Grading
Grading will be based on attendance and participation in the seminar, and on a final paper due a the end of the quarter.
