Description

English 10B focuses on literatures written in English between 1700 and 1900. The second in a three-part series required for majors, this course revolves around intensive reading, writing, and preparation for upper-division work. Students will develop their close reading skills while learning how to situate literature in historical and interpretive contexts.

Students will have the chance:
- to familiarize themselves with several frameworks for approaching eighteenth- and nineteenth-century literature and literary history (including, for example, the rise of consumer culture; the changing nature of human rights rhetoric; and the dynamic interplay between empire, race, and sexuality);
- to explore a range of literary forms and movements across genre and nation;
- and to strengthen their skills in literary analysis and research in anticipation of more advanced study.
