Description

Bram Stoker, Dracula, and the 1890s

This course will read Bram Stoker’s celebrated 1897 novel Dracula in relation to key topics in the Britain of the 1890s. In addition to reading the novel itself, as well as other fiction by Stoker, we will investigate how Stoker’s work participates in, for instance, debates about homosexuality, the management of the theatre, Irish self-government, medical ethics, psychology, and technological innovation.
