Description

We will begin with Eliza Haywood’s Fantomina and move chronologically through the period, concluding with Oscar Wilde’s play, The Importance of Being Earnest. In between we will touch on a great variety of literary forms, fictional and non-fictional, canonical and non-canonical, in prose as well as poetry, by women as well as by men. Close attention will be paid also to the works’ social and cultural contexts, as we consider related art forms and discuss topics such as colonization, slavery, sentiment, science, travel, gender, poverty, reform, and war.

Grading

Grading will be based on quizzes and in-class assignments (15%), two papers (40%), a midterm (15%), a final (15%), and attendance and participation (15%).
