Description
This course will engage some of the dominant themes of 20th century literature—namely the modern desire to follow Pound’s dictum to “make it new” amidst the pervasive influence of the past, and the ongoing tension between a desire for authentic rootedness in place and the freedom of an uprooted nomadism. We will examine the relationship of modern poetry to past forms and themes, for example, Millay’s use of the sonnet, Bishops use of the villanelle, and Ginsberg’s biblical allusions. We will also cover works by Kerouac, Updike, Snyder, and Berry, which grapple with the questions and tensions of individual freedom versus communal relationships to place.
