Lecture/discussion—3 hours; term paper. Prerequisite: course 3 or University Writing Program 1. Historically or thematically focused study of works of the Renaissance. May be repeated for credit when content differs. GE credit: Wrt.

Topic
The general topic for the course is the development of English prose literature. Specific topics may include portrayal of women, Utopian literature, exploration literature, pastoral romances, and early English proto-novels.

Examinations
There will be two examinations consisting of largely of essay, short answer, and multiple-choice questions. Each examination will cover about ½ of the course material; the final examination will not be cumulative.

Papers
Each student will write two papers: a prospectus and a final critical paper. The prospectus will preview the subject, approach, structure, and sources of the second paper. In the final paper you will analyze one or more works of Renaissance prose. Details of both assignments will be distributed to the class and posted online. Length: prospectus, 750 words; final paper 2,000 words.

Attendance
Regular attendance is expected and appreciated, as is informed participation in class discussion. Students who choose not to attend class regularly are nevertheless responsible for all announcements, alterations, and additions to the course schedule and assignments. Prompt arrival at the beginning of class is also expected. Late arrival is distracting and discourteous to students and instructor alike.
