Description

This course offers a view of 20th centuries literatures in English, organized both (loosely) chronologically and conceptually. Each week we'll proceed under the heading of a different "keyword" central to grasping the period and its literature. The course moves among poetry, fiction, and drama, as well as the occasional critical essay; the goal is get a sense at once of the era, already becoming mysterious to us, and some of the pivotal texts with which people oriented (and disoriented) themselves. At the same time, this is a reading-and writing-intensive class, designed to prepare you for upper-division courses in the English major. Note: in addition to the required texts, further required course reading will be available via SmartSite.

Grading

15 points: Reading Notes (three sets, 5 pts each)
25 points: Close Reading Essay (4-5 pgs)
30 points: Research Paper (6-7 pgs)
10 points: Comprehensive Final Exam
20 points: participation, in-class assignments
