ENL 106 English Grammar for Engineers and STEM students (4)

Lecture—3 hours; discussion—1 hour. Prerequisite: course 1 or English 3 or Linguistics 1 or consent of instructor; and major in engineering, science, technology, or math. This survey of present-day English grammar uses a new methodology to examine the architecture of sentences through the lens of math. Intended for students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), the course serves as both alternative and complement to the study of grammar and style as informed by contemporary linguistic theories. Instead of line diagrams, logic trees, and labels, the system uses algebraic equations and variables to characterize structures and syntax that are universal. Required math level: trigonometry, Desired math level: calculus.
