This course will examine the nature and extent of literary censorship in the United States. We will examine books that have been challenged, suppressed, and banned in the U.S. on political, religious, social, and sexual grounds. The books censored in the U.S. include, for the most part, many of the classics of American and European literature.

Grading

Students will present reports on selected “banned books” in the United States and write one or more papers on aspects of literary censorship in America. Regular attendance and active participation will be expected.
