Description

The second in a three-course series, English 10B intended to prepare you for upper-division coursework in English literature. The focus of this course is literature in English from 1700 to 1900, from sources on both sides of the Anglophone Atlantic. Within this historical framework, we will be discussing the emergence not only of certain literary genres and trends but also the social and political discourses that give shape to (and are shaped by) this literature. While we will touch on a number of themes from this era, we will pay particular attention to the interplay of literary form and issues of race, gender, and colonialism.

Ultimately, this reading- and writing-intensive course is designed to improve your critical and written skills by asking you to investigate how various texts fit replicate or resist larger literary-historical narratives.
