Description

English 10B is the second of the three part Literatures in English sequence required for all majors. This section will cover a series of works from eighteenth and nineteenth century American, British, and Anglophone literature. The object of the Literatures in English sequence is to familiarize you with key developments and transformations in literary history while improving your reading and writing skills in preparation for upper division course work. Topics we will consider include: empire and colonialism; national identity and England’s relationship to Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and America; the rise of the novel and the correlation between genre and cultural context, the shifting dynamic of class and gender in relation to the rise of commodity capitalism. Listed below those texts which will be available for purchase at the bookstore; other poems and stories in the public domain will be available on Smart Site.
