Description
This course provides an introduction to the 20th century by way of some of its literature in English. We'll read some novels and some stories and some poems and a play. We'll think about how we got from, I dunno, the second industrial revolution to the LA Riots, plus some other stuff. There's a lot of reading. It's a class for people who are willing to do a lot of reading. The list of books below is just those for sale at the bookstore; there'll be other materials on the website.
Grading
Grading will be based on a mixture of reading notes, attendance+participation, two essays (one shorter, one longer), and a final exam, with the essays playing the central role.
