Description

This is the third and final course in the required Literatures in English sequence, focusing on Anglophone writing from 1900 to the present. One goal of this class is to prepare English majors for success in upper division coursework, which means there will be a large amount of reading and writing. We will read various fiction and poetry in order to examine experimentation with form and genre, consider changing conceptions of identity, and situate these texts in terms of their historical, literary, political, and aesthetic contexts.

Authors for this course include: Gertrude Stein, James Joyce, Ernest Hemingway, T.S. Eliot, Claude McKay, Langston Hughes, Robert Hayden, Nella Larsen, Amiri Baraka, Gwendolyn Brooks, Frank O'Hara, Philip K. Dick, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Jeanette Winterson.

The list of books below has been ordered at the bookstore, but additional readings will be available for free on Canvas.
