Description
Time and Place as Contextual Tool: Use of Setting in Fiction
How do writers build worlds in such a way that they not only make readers see all of the things they're projecting on the walls of the imagination, but also contextualize that world on all levels, from plot construction to sociopolitical commentary? This course will examine different writers' uses of both time and place to make sense of the fictional worlds they are creating. We will discuss texts from four different regions: Appalachia, the Northeastern United States, California, and the Sahara Desert.
Grading
You will turn in two papers or creative works. Creative works will be graded according to a rubric I will give you in class.
