English 100NF - Winter, 2018
Creative Writing: Nonfiction
Class Information
Instructor:
Pollard, Elise
Time:
TR 4:40-6:00
Location:
308 Voorhies
Description
In this class, we’ll focus on the art and craft of creative nonfiction, a form capable of seemingly endless shapeshifting, with an emphasis on flash nonfiction, brief essays under 2000 words. Though flash by definition demands concision, it opens up room for experimentation in style, voice, structure and more. Through discussion of published and student work, we’ll ask: How can we use this hybrid form to lead our readers and ourselves to what writer Bret Lott calls “an explosion of recognition, a burst of self-awareness” and to look outward as much as inward? We’ll read, write, revise, and urge one another to engage fully, and full of curiosity, as writers in the world. Course readings will include assigned texts and supplemental materials.
