Description
English 10B is the second in a series of three classes surveying Literatures in English. This particular class covers literature from 1700-1900 in British and American contexts. The course will prepare you for further study in the major by setting up a methodological foundation for studying literature in terms of form (through close reading) and historical context. We will be particularly interested in tracking the historical emergence and development of literary forms over time. Topics likely to be discussed are the following: the development of the novel; Romanticism, Realism, and Naturalism; the emergence of modern subjectivities; gender and sexuality; race and empire; class and capitalism. This class will involve plenty of reading and writing, including two essays and a substantial written section on the midterm and final exam.
Note on texts: The main texts for this course are previous editions of Norton anthologies. While the current editions of the Norton are extremely expensive, these slightly older editions are practically identical and can be purchased online very cheaply, often under $10 shipped. Please note carefully the specified editions and ISBN numbers below, and be sure to purchase the correct edition. While we won't come close to covering all the material included in these volumes, they will serve you well in years to come as valuable resources and references.
