In this course we will explore the world of Jane Austen. We will discuss five of her fictions (Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Persuasion, and Lady Susan); consider the socio-political and cultural contexts of her writings; examine historical reception and current critical evaluation of her work; screen excerpts from and evaluate film adaptations; view samples of her considerable online presence; and account more generally for Austen’s place in popular culture and among scholars today.

Grading

Papers 25%, Exams 20%, Assignments and Quizzes 20%, Reports 20%, Attendance and Participation 15%.
