Description

English 5F is an introductory fiction writing course. Emphasis in this course will be on understanding and applying foundational techniques of literary fiction writing, including characterization, detail, point of view, plot, dialog, setting, and revision. Essays on these craft elements, paired with short story readings, will allow you to develop a working craft vocabulary and a sense of methodology, while writing exercises inspired and directed by these readings and more open, complete short story writing assignments will allow you to apply them. Finally, through discussions of published works and peer works-in-progress, you will practice locating and articulating these foundational elements of craft to deepen your understanding of them in your own work.
