Description
This course will survey a variety of medieval literary traditions from around the world, including not only English texts such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and the Canterbury Tales but also lyrics, romances, and other genres from Italy, the Islamic world, Japan, and elsewhere (all texts not originally in English will be presented in translation). By interweaving these different literary texts in our study, we will broaden our understanding of the culture of the medieval world within and beyond England.
Grading
Paper #1: 15%; paper #2 and required proposal 20%; midterm 15%; final exam 20%; attendance and participation 15%; reading quizzes 15%
