Description
Histories of Animation:
Mode of Instruction: Synchronous using Zoom and Syncplay
This course will provide a survey of animation beginning from the late 19th century to the present. We will examine the history of early animation tools, from early traditions of vaudeville stage shows to the rise of the major American studios and experimental animation. We will then investigate the emergence of different aesthetic practices around the world from the Film Board of Canada to Eastern European claymation to the Japanese anime boom. The class will culminate with a look at how animation has become ubiquitous within expanded cinema and digital media, paying specific attention to the relationship between animation and videogames.
Goals:
*To learn how to analyze short-form animation and related media
*To learn how to collectively watch and discuss animated media in a remote environment
*To develop research methods, theories, and practices for undertaking a larger research-based project
