Alumni Stories: Melissa Freeman '12

The UC Davis English Department was the perfect place to begin my higher education because it provided me with a challenging and stimulating curriculum taught by passionate faculty and shared with an engaged group of  fellow students. My favorite aspect of the English Department at UC Davis was the professors’ ability and desire to apply the themes found in literature of every period and genre to real-world understanding of concepts such as gender and sexuality, citizenry, race, media, globalization and more.

This was an excellent foundation from which to begin my inquiry into what career would be most satisfying to address the issues faced by the characters of literature and their counterparts that we encounter in our everyday lives. As a current student at Harvard Law School, English gave me the analytical and writing tools I needed to be able to synthesize and distill large amounts of information in order to understand complex materials and articulate persuasive arguments.
