Life After UC Davis English PhD - Ian Afflerbach
Ian Afflerbach

Job title: Marion L. Brittain Fellow in the School of Literature, Media and Communication at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

In the first year of a three-year fellowship, Ian is currently teaching a course entitled "From Print Culture to Digital Archive: Modern American Literature and its Periodicals.” This class introduces first year students to Georgia Tech's WOVEN theory of communication (Written Oral Visual Electronic Nonverbal) by having them write essays, design infographics, give presentations, and record videos.

Ian reports that he has worked up and stumbled upon some genuinely innovative pedagogical moments during the first weeks of teaching this course. “The students are damn sharp,” he tells us, which means for an assignment making use of materials from the Modernist Journals Project, his prompt may be essentially "here's a digital archive: show me what you can do." It’s exciting, Ian says, to see what they put together.
