Student Profile Series: Amber Torres

The UC Davis English Department presents Amber Torres! Amber is an English (Creative Writing emphasis) major with a minor in Education.

What is your favorite memory at UC Davis?

My favorite memory at UC Davis is when I was at the MU, and I was determined not to waste any food. I held the pear in my hand as I set out on a journey across campus looking for the horses to ask if I could feed them. After 2 hours of searching, I had eaten the entire pear in my hand and laughed when I opened my bag to find a squashed pear on the bottom of it.

What are you passionate about?

I am passionate about educating students and giving them the support they need to succeed. I'm also passionate about helping animals and the nature around us thrive in a world that harms it. My goal is to make the world a better place for all living things.

If you could write a book about your life, what would the title be?

"A Milky Path to Paradise". Everyone around me knows my love for milk since I was young. I also felt like I went with the flow of things while standing up for myself, and it has taken me to paradise.

What makes you proud to be an English major?

Knowing that I have been given the opportunity to be taught by such knowledgeable and creative minds is a humbling experience. I am proud to declare that I am walking in their footsteps to a path of discovery and self-fulfillment. The English major allows you to reflect on humanity and realize the world around you that provides me with a deeper understanding of myself and society.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I see myself married to my fiancé in Australia. I will be a high school English teacher striving to ignite the flame my professor, Frank Newton, lit in me freshman year in ENL 003. I will also be publishing my writing and volunteering to help save our wildlife and beaches.

List three of your favorite English Professors.

Professor M. Stratton, Frank Newton, and Jazmine Kitses.

What do you like to do in your free time to unwind?

To unwind, I love to exercise with my corgi and travel to new locations together. If I have to stay inside, I love nothing more than playing instruments or expanding my mind with new knowledge. Sometimes when I feel artistic, I find myself painting or working on a new project with different material in my room.

What is a must read for an English major?

The KJV Bible is an excellent book not only for it's whimsical stories, but it's a great source to practice close-reading skills. It's debatably the biggest problem text out there which is an English majors entrée.

List three of your favorite English classes.

ENL 166 (Love and Desire in Contemporary American Poetry), ENL 110A (Intro. to Literary Theory), ENL 156 (Short Stories).

If you had one wish for the English Department/ Community here on campus... what would it be?

I would wish that the English Community showed themselves more on campus. I see a lot of clubs on campus, but I see little representation for the English major. The English major is excellent, so I want others to experience what we have to offer.
