English 290P - Winter, 2011
Seminar in Creative Writing of Poetry
Class Information
Instructor:
Williamson, Alan B.
Time:
T 12:10-3:00
Location:
308 Voorhies
Description
The basic assignment is (approximately) a poem a week, and a final selection of the student's four best poems from the term. In the outside reading, we will consider the range of styles in American poetry from the 1950's to the present, using The Vintage Book of Contemporary American Poetry. Students will also be asked to prepare a personal anthology.
Grading
One poem a week is expected. The final assignment is the student's own selection of his or her four best poems. The grade is based mainly on the quality of this final sheaf; but participation, quality of work, and improvement are also taken into account. A report on a volume of contemporary poetry will also be expected.
