Class Information
Instructor:
Glazner, Greg
CRN:
53542
Time:
MWF 12:10-1:00
Location:
207 Olson
Description
This course will have two main focal points. First, Jean Toomer’s Cane, emphasizing the contrast between rural and urban sensibilities, will help set the stage for the poets of the Harlem Renaissance. Second, the poetry and prose of Robert Hayden and Amiri Baraka will help prepare us for disparate views of African American poetry related to the Black Arts Movement. Recordings of period blues and jazz will be played at key points during the course. Verbal improvisations and poems with allusions to blues and jazz will be explored, and contemporary African-American poetry will be introduced.
Grading
Weekly quizzes and participation, two papers, a midterm test (prep toward the final exam), and a final exam.
