The Bible as Literature: The Old Testament

Description
This course is an introduction to the narratives, poetry, and writings of the Hebrew Bible. Special attention will be given to methods of interpretation through time, the making and remaking of the canon, translations, the texts that have particular importance to English and European literature, and the Bible as the source of symbolic language in literary and other cultural forms.
Students will read supporting material on canonicity, the historical critical method and its problems, and sociologocial, literary, and socio-historical approaches to the Bible. There will also be a number of visual presentations to support the discussions of interpretative methods and their results.
Grading
1 long paper (10 pages), due in the eighth week of the quarter (50%), class participation (10%) and a final exam (40%).
