English 290P - Winter, 2012
Seminar in Creative Writing of Poetry
Class Information
Instructor:
Clover, Joshua
Time:
T 12:10-3:00
Location:
120 Voorhies
Description
This is a workshop course. We will workshop poems, carefully, with each poem assigned a "first reader" who will present the work to the class. We will also read one non-poetic text, a history of the writing workshop (that focuses mainly on fiction). Every participant will be asked to chose and present a contemporary book of poetry. Finally, there will be a portfolio submitted at end of term, featuring five new poems and five revisions, as well as a note on revision process.
Grading
Grading based entirely on a) fulfilling the class obligations, which is the simply enabling condition for getting a grade in the first place; and b) the seriousness and commitment with which one honors the course's social contract to read each other's work with care and offer thoughtful responses. Grade thoroughly unrelated to quality of poetry.
