Description
This course is designed as an introduction to the critical study of literature. Toward developing various methods and approaches for reading literary texts, we will consider major works of English-language literature in relation to popular culture -- from movies and television to pop songs and architecture. Sometimes this will mean grasping the ways literature is like pop culture, sometimes, the ways it is distinct, and sometimes the moments when literature IS pop culture. Behind this all will be one very simple fact: pop culture itself is a very peculiar thing, only possible within certain historical developments. So we'll think about that too.
Readings will be available by PDf on smartsite, or online.
