Scott Shershow
In this seminar we will read closely a relatively small number of texts from six foundational philosophers: Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Marx, Nietzsche, and Derrida.
Tentative reading List:
Plato, from Republic
Aristotle, Poetics
Kant, selections from The Critique of Judgment
Kant, Groundwork of the Metaphysic of Morals
Marx, selections from The German Ideology and other early writings
Marx, selections from Capital and other later writings
Nietzsche, The Birth of Tragedy
Nietzsche, from The Gay Science
Derrida, "Differance" and "Structure, Sign and Play in the Discourse of the Human Sciences"
Derrida, On Hospitality
Grading
Evaluation will be based on seminar participation, weekly ungraded response papers, and a concluding term paper, in which students can, if they wish, bring their own research interests to bear on the course readings.
