Description
This course provides an introduction to the 20th century by way of some of its literature in English. We'll read some novels and some poems and a play. Also a couple challenging essays. We'll think about how we got from the second industrial revolution to the LA Riots, more or less, plus some other stuff. There's a lot of reading. It's a class for people who are willing to do a lot of reading ? almost a book a week. In addition to the list of books below there'll be other materials on the website. The good news is, there will be free copies available; don't buy anything. Please note: a description of this course from a previous year was posted in error; you are now reading the correct description.
Grading
Grading will be based on a mixture of reading notes, attendance+participation, in-class quizzes and final exam, and one essay
