Description
Maud Casey writes, “Stories are how we stand in the presence of mystery. If mystery, the genre, is about finding the answers, then mystery, that elusive yet essential element of fiction, is about finding the questions.” In this intermediate fiction workshop, students will practice reading as writers in order to identify questions at the heart of a range of short stories, and, through critical and creative writing, discover the questions that are at the center of their own short fiction.
Together, we’ll read essays and engage in an ongoing conversation to challenge and deepen our understanding of craft, as well as examine a range of short story specimens that embody the flexibility of the form. Over the quarter students will lead discussion, read, write, and revise extensively and radically using introduced strategies for editing and revision, while documenting their process and responding to one another’s work-in-progress.
