100NF Creative Nonfiction Styles: Writing Yourself, Writing Your World
This course asks you to delve deeper into creative writing--to read, think, and practice like a writer. Creative Nonfiction is a genre that encompasses a huge range of writing styles, from the lyrical to the analytical, from the autobiographical to the investigative. The goal of our genre is to communicate truthfully, beautifully, and urgently. Our materials are fact and memory--examining ourselves and our moment in time and place. Weekly reading assignments will expand your sense of the vast possibilities of this genre. Weekly writing prompts (both in class and at home) are designed to keep your pen moving and set your mind on new paths. A significant amount of class time will also be devoted to peer workshop to help you develop your stories. At the end of the semester, all students will have completed three short pieces and one longer researched essay, and submitted at least one work for publication.
