Student Profile Series: Coralie Border
The English Department presents Coralie Border (she/her), a third-year undergraduate student and English peer advisor. She is an English (creative writing emphasis) and sociology double major.
What is your favorite memory at UC Davis?
To be honest, my favorite memories will always be of spending time at the arboretum. In the midst of my hectic freshman schedule, I would always try to find time to stop by the arboretum, watch the ducks nap in the grass, and de-stress with a good book.
What is a must-read for an English major?
Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf (but also, anything by Virginia Woolf). The way Woolf combines different perspectives and distorts the passing of time helped challenge my perception of what a novel was capable of.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
In 10 years I hope to be living somewhere in Oregon (with a few very big dogs), writing poems and working for a nonprofit organization. I would love to be doing something I never thought was an option.
What are you passionate about?
Most simply, I am passionate about the creative process. I love being creative (whether that means writing, playing music, or creating artwork), and I love helping others find their creative voices. I think the world needs more safe, creative spaces where people can be encouraged to express themselves without judgment.
What do you like to do in your free time to unwind?
I love doing yoga with my roommates, playing guitar, and crocheting. If I've had an especially tiring day, my favorite thing to do is make hot chocolate and watch an old Disney movie.
If you could write a book about your life, what would the title be?
Out of the Future, into the Present.
What makes you proud to be an English major?
Reading and studying English is not only fun and rewarding, but it has drastically changed how I view the world, other people, and myself. Understanding language impacts every aspect of one's life, which, if you think about it, is kind of like a superpower.
If you had one wish for the English Department/Community here on campus...what would it be?
My wish is that everyone has a rewarding undergraduate experience and feels supported while studying English. While the English department may be small compared to other majors on campus, our community is strong and welcoming, and it is my hope that others feel this as well.
