Biography: 

Ph.D., Harvard

Professor Byrd was Assistant Professor and Associate Professor at Yale University and Visiting Professor at Stanford University. He joined the UC Davis Faculty as an Associate Professor of English in 1976 and has been Professor of English since 1981. He has lectured at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California, Irvine, the University of Warwick, the University of Southern California, Yale University, and the Sorbonne. He is currently on the Advisory Board of the Squaw Valley Community of Writers. From 1977-1988, Professor Byrd served as the editor of Eighteenth-Century Studies. He is the author of twelve books, and numerous essays and reviews. His novel California Thriller won the Shamus Award of The Private Eye Writers of America. Other novels include Jefferson, Target of Opportunity, and Jackson. His historical novel, Grant, was published in August 2000.
