PETER DALE taught in the English Department at UC Davis from 1980 until his retirement. He served as Department Chair from 1991 to 1993. Professor Dale completed his PhD at Cambridge and taught at Harvard before coming to Davis. His research interests included British literature, literary theory, and nineteenth-century philosophy. Dale wrote several books on the Victorian period, including The Victorian Critic and the Idea of History (1977) and In Pursuit of a Scientific Culture (1989). He taught courses in Romantic and Victorian literature, as well as twentieth-century British fiction. Dale also served in a variety of administrative roles at UC Davis, including Vice Provost for Academic Programs, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, and Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies.
