Sandra McPherson

SANDRA MCPHERSON (1943-2024) taught in the English Department at UC Davis from 1985 until her retirement. Before coming to UC Davis, McPherson taught at the University of Iowa Writer’s Workshop, UC Berkeley, and the Pacific Northwest College of Art. McPherson was the author of numerous collections of poetry, including A Visit to Civilization (2002), The Edge Effect (1996), The Spaces Between Birds (1996), The God of Indeterminacy (1993), The Year of Our Birth (1978), and Elegies for the Hot Season (1970). Professor McPherson was the recipient of three National Endowment for the Arts fellowships, a Guggenheim fellowship, and an Award in Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters.  While teaching at UC Davis, she founded Swan Scythe Press, which published more than twenty titles.
