Description
As the second part of the 10 series of historical survey courses, 10B is designed to familiarize you with some of the major authors, genres, and themes found in literature in English between 1700 and 1900. This is the period where English Literature became literature in English, as Britain’s empire spread the language well beyond the North Atlantic. Thus our work will be spread broadly as well, primarily between Britain and North America. The focus of our analysis will be the creation of identity in relationship to power, particularly as it pertains to nation, gender, and sexuality. Our primary tools of inquiry will be close reading and discussion, conducted in class and in writing.
