Literatures in English: 1900 -Present
Class Information
Instructor: Clover, Joshua
Time: TR 3:10-4:30
GE Areas: Writing Experience
Description
This course provides an introduction to the 20th century by way of some of its literature in English. We'll read some novels and some stories and some poems and a play. We'll think about how we got from, I dunno, the second industrial revolution to the LA Riots, plus some other stuff. There's a lot of reading. It's a class for people who are willing to do a lot of reading ? almost a book a week. In addition to the list of books below there'll be other materials on the website. The good news is, there will be free copies available; don't buy anything.
We'll try to do this in a way that works virtually. Classes and sections will be synchronous. However, the lectures will be recorded and available for asynchronous viewing/notes for the duration of the week in which they happen. Because sections are specifically for discussion, they will only be synchronous and attendance is expected.
Grading
Grading will be based on a mixture of reading notes, attendance+participation, two essays (one shorter, one longer), and a final exam. The basic expectation is this: do these things, do them sincerely, and you will get an A. No other grades. Do the work, get the A, the end.
