Description

In this course, we will explore British literature from 1800 to 1900. Our readings will include poetry, prose, and drama produced in England and the British Colonies. We will focus on influential and representative texts that allow us to trace the emergence of major literary trends, dialogues, debates, and forms during this eventful century.

Key themes that we may explore include gender and sexuality, rights and revolution, publication and popular readers, domesticity and adventure, empire and race, industrialization and labor, individual and community.
