Description
ENL 252 Victorian Literature and the Security State
This course will investigate security imaginaries in the nineteenth century, an investigation that will take us through the founding of metropolitan police forces, militarism (especially in imperial contexts, but in other armed conflicts as well), and other forms of state violence. We will read a novels, poems, memoirs, journalism, and
pamphlets that examine these topics by authors such as Mary Seacole, Florence Nightingale, Karl Marx, Dadabhai Naoroji, Rudyard Kipling, Doodnath Tewarry, and Arthur Conan Doyle. Critical theory and secondary scholarship in multiple modes will help us interpret these texts; we will likely encounter texts that include ones by Mark Neocleous, Michel Foucault, Inderpal Grewal, Michael Hardt, Paul Amar, Neel Ahuja, Micol Seigel, Zarena Aslami, and Tanya Agathocleous.
