Lecture/discussion—4 hours. Prerequisite: completion of Entry Level Writing requirement. Elementary principles of writing creative non-fiction. Work in prescribed literary forms (such as essay, meditation, biography, memoir, book review, documentary, or experimental non-fiction forms) and forms of students' choosing. No final examination.
Summary of Course Contents
This course is an introductory workshop in Creative Writing for writers who wish to concentrate in nonfiction. A substantial reading component accompanied by relevant classroom discussions will help participants explore the craft of writing and gain a critical vocabulary. Writers will work in prescribed literary forms (such as essay, meditation, biography, memoir, book review, documentary, or experimental non-fiction forms) and forms of their own choosing. They will gain exposure to a greater literary world and its practices. Most importantly, they will become familiar with the rudiments of reading, writing, and revising.
Grading
Class participation is essential. Writing exercises will lead up to a final portfolio. Some prose analysis of assigned texts may be required.
